Norman Ericson

Norman R. Ericson was born in Loomis, Nebraska on July 21, 1932 to Raymond and Myrtle Ericson. When he was a young child, the family moved to Holdrege, Nebraska where his early education took place and where he was an active participant in church and high school activities. He was enrolled at Trinity Seminary and Bible College from 1950-1952 when he graduated in 1952 with an Associate of Arts degree. He then earned his B.A. degree from the University of Nebraska. Returning to Trinity in 1954, he earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity Seminary in 1957. He completed his studies with a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies at the University of Chicago in 1972.

While at Trinity College, he met Ruth Peterson from Minnesota, and after a three-year courtship they were married in 1954 at the First Evangelical Free Church in Chicago. Together they had four children after 57 years of marriage. During Seminary, he served for three years as youth pastor of Winnetka Bible Church under the preaching ministry of Rev. Harold DeVries.

Dr. Norman Raymond Ericson was Professor Emeritus of Wheaton College (IL) having served as Professor of New Testament from 1977 until his retirement in 2000 concluding 43 years in his chosen profession. During that time he also served as Chair of the Department of Bible Theology and Archeology of Wheaton College and the Wheaton Graduate School. Prior to teaching at Wheaton, Dr. Ericson taught New Testament and Greek at Trinity College and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Deerfield IL.) He also taught as an adjunct professor at Northern Baptist Seminary (Lombard, IL) and at the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and in New Jersey. He led three trips of summer studies to The Holy Lands.

One of the significant contributions Dr. Ericson made in the scholarship of Biblical Studies was his work on the interpretation of the Old Testament in the New Testament. He also concentrated his scholarship on the Petrine Epistles of the New Testament, 1st Peter, 2nd Peter and Jude. In 1988 he began his involvement with Tyndale House Publishers as a General Reviewer of the Letters and Revelation sections of the New Testament for the New Living Translation of the Bible.

Dr. Norman R. Ericson, age 79, died on December 22, 2011.
